LASG PRESENTS HYBRID SOLAR-POWERED AIR COMPRESSOR PUMPING MACHINE AND AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT FOR VULCANISERS

The Lagos State Planning and Environmental Monitoring Authority (LASEPMA) in its quest to redefine Urban Space and Regulate all activities on Setbacks and Incidental Open Spaces (IOS) for the purpose of achieving orderliness and promoting environmental sustainability in the state, introduced *a Hybrid Solar-Powered Air Compressor Pumping Machine to vulcanisers in Lagos State. The equipment has other auxiliary equipment which includes *a Metal kiosk, 3.5-Ton Hydraulic Jack, and Tyre Changer* which will make vulcanisers work seamlessly and efficiently in our present-day Smart City Lagos.

The invention is the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa and also a testament and reflection of Lagos as a pacesetter and Center of Excellence. The equipment is eco-friendly, with zero tolerance for carbon emission - no need for fossil fuel, a unique proposition that is in line with Gov Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Administration’s *T.H.E.M.E.S.* Agenda.

Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu who was represented by the *Chief of Staff and Director General (DG) of Asiwaju-Shetimma/Sanwo-Hamzat Independent Campaign Council (ICC), Mr Tayo Akinmade Ayinde* said LASG has decided to procure the equipment for the vulcanisers.  He said ‘’ the days of petrol is over; the days of engine oil is over.’’ The DG, who conferred on himself the title of Vulcaniser General assured them that this is just the tip of the iceberg and greater days are ahead for the vulcanisers in as much as they continue to support the policies of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s Administration.

The General Manager LASPEMA, Tpl. Daisi Oso while addressing the public said ‘’the equipment is a product of creative and strategic thinking of the Agency after a series of brainstorming sessions with his team. ’’He further laid credence to the fact that the project was birthed after the World Habitat Day Celebration of 2021 with the theme: *Accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world.*

The GM highlighted the benefits of this laudable initiative to include: Capturing Lagos carbon footprints; Carbon Credits Eligibility; Improved overall work efficiency of vulcanisers with a view to enhancing service delivery that will lead to productivity, promotion of self-worth and dignity of labour for Artisans (Vulcanisers); Improved health and overall work conditions of vulcanisers in Lagos State. Another benefit is building mutual trust between LASG and the citizens of Lagos State.

The GM also used the opportunity to shower encomiums on the Leadership of the Lagos State Vulcanisers Association (LASVA). He salutes the resilience and steadfastness as well as the trust they have in LASG by extension, LASPEMA over the almost two-year journey that has witnessed more than 10 Stakeholders’ Engagement with LASVA.   Oso said ‘’though we have 7,500 registered members of your association in our database, but I believe by the time the project commences fully, I believe your membership will grow astronomically. In the same vein, Tpl Oso spoke about the newly developed app for vulcanizers which will allow the public to access vulcanizers service via their smart phones.

In an ongoing arrangement, LASPEMA is working with Globacom to link the Lagos Health Scheme (Ilera Eko) with LASVA for the purpose of providing TeleMedicine where vulcanisers will have access to free medical consultations online. In achieving this feat, the Regional Head, Public Sector Sales Department of Globacom Nigeria, Mr Bola Onifade says Globacom will be giving free lines to the 7,500 registered vulcanisers as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR).

LASVA Chairman, Prince Aderopo Oguntade while giving his remarks was full of praise for the Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for helping to actualize their dreams. He further stated that ‘’people like Tpl Oso should be allowed to occupy public office because of his humility and accessibility. The Chairman thanked the GM for midwifing the association’s meeting with the DG, Mr Tayo Ayinde. Prince Aderopo also used the opportunity to express his profound appreciation to the DG for giving 2 slots each for both Mecca and Jerusalem Pilgrimage.

Determined Nigeria ltd and ITop Masters Milano both LASPEMA’s Technical Partners, Engr Davies Ajayi and Engr Damola Babs respectively affirmed that the equipment is durable and has the capacity to work for 6 hours when the sun sets. Its hybrid nature allows the equipment to be recharged with electricity because it has two inbuilt batteries.
