In a swift operation, the recently constituted security committee setup to stop the nefarious activities of scavengers, has apprehended one of the four man gang scavengers who was vandalizing the Festac Link Bridge in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area.
The suspect, identified as Abduraheem Taiye from Kwara State and squating in an illegal structure by the canal beside the bridge was caught in the act of removing iron rods from the bridge's structure, causing damage to the critical infrastructure.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect has been a notorious scavenger in the area, targeting vulnerable structures to steal valuable materials.
The Supervisor for Environment who coordinates the committee, Hon. Gbenga Nathaniel Akinbinu condemned the suspect's actions, stating that "vandalism of critical infrastructure is a serious offense that poses a significant threat to public safety."
"We are committed to protecting our community's assets and ensuring that those who engage in criminal activities are brought to justice," Hon. Akinbinu explained.
The suspect has been handed over to the authorities and is facing charges related to vandalism and theft.
The Local Government Security Committee has urged residents to report any suspicious activities to the authorities and to support their efforts in keeping the community safe.
This arrest is a significant victory in the committee's fight against vandalism and scavenging in the area.
