As the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) strengthens coordination of intervention in flood situations in the country, the United Nations ad interim (acting) Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mrs Elsie Attafuah on Wednesday paid a visit to the Agency to explore how the United Nations system can better support the Government and NEMA in the management of the flood disaster.
In her remarks, Mrs. Attafuah emphasized the UN's commitment to aid in coordination, capacity building, training, and technical assistance. She mentioned the need for improved data collection, water purification systems, mobile clinics, and search and rescue equipment.
While noting that more support may be required in other areas of the flood management, she assured that additional effort would be made to facilitate provision of gadgets for data collection, Water purification systems, mobile clinics and other search and rescue equipment.
Responding, the Director General NEMA Mrs Zubaida Umar appreciated the United Nations for the concerns and solidarity over the flood situation in Nigeria.
She highlighted efforts by NEMA since the release of the flood forecast and various proactive steps taken to prevent, mitigate and respond to the flooding this year.
The DG NEMA spoke on the Agency’s activation of stakeholders, deployment of technical personnel and equipment to already flooded locations and states that are at risk of also having the disaster.
