LAGOS TASKFORCE WARNS AGAINST STREET BLOCKING FOR SOCIAL EVENTS

The Lagos State Taskforce has issued a strong warning to residents who are in the habit of blocking streets and occupying parts of the road to host parties, social gatherings, and religious events, causing significant inconvenience to other residents and motorists. The Lagos State Taskforce, in its commitment to maintaining environmental decorum and ensuring smooth traffic flow across the state, has condemned this practice in its entirety.

Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, expressed deep concerns over the growing trend of residents obstructing public roads for personal events, noting that such actions not only disrupt the lives of law-abiding citizens but also pose serious security and safety risks.

“It is unacceptable for any individual or group to hijack public spaces, especially roads meant for the free movement of people and vehicles, for their own selfish interests,” he stated.

Akerele highlighted that social a event was distupted some weeks ago at Raymond Njoku Street in Ikoyi after the attention of the Taskforce was drawn to it. The traffic obstruction and noise pollution was completely absurd, thus the need to disrupt the event and arrest the key organisers.

“We are also aware of social events on inner streets like Lawani Street in Yaba, Ganiyu Lamina Street at Ijaye Ojokoro and other streets around Lagos  Metropolis. We are appealing to the perpetrators of this act to desist forthwith or br faced with serious sanctions of the law.”

The Chairman further emphasized that the Lagos Taskforce will not tolerate any act that compromises environmental and public safety or inconveniences road users. He highlighted that necessary enforcement actions will be taken against anyone found violating this directive.

“Blocking roads for parties or religious events is illegal, and those involved will face the full weight of the law.”

He urged residents to utilize designated event centres or obtain the required permits from appropriate authorities before organizing any gathering that may affect public roads. CSP Akerele also reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to ensuring a safer, more orderly environment for all residents.

The Lagos State Taskforce, in conjunction with other security agencies, will be carrying out routine monitoring and swift enforcement to prevent further disruption of roads and inner streets. Residents are encouraged to report any incidents of road obstruction through the ‘See Something, Say Something’ initiative of the Agency to ensure prompt intervention.
