The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) marked the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism to Eliminate Gender-Based Violence, running from November 25 to December 10, 2024, coinciding with International Human Rights Day.
At the advocacy campaign launch at the Oniwaya Palace in Yaba, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of the DSVA, emphasized the importance of collaborating with traditional rulers to close gaps in addressing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in the state. The agency is partnering with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Program, supported by the European Union and implemented by the International IDEA, to engage 16 traditional rulers to assist in the campaign.
Vivour-Adeniyi highlighted the agency’s data-driven approach in selecting kingdoms with high prevalence and low reporting of SGBV cases. She stressed the importance of challenging myths surrounding these issues and using traditional rulers as first responders and cultural custodians to fight violence in their communities.
The campaign will travel across Lagos, covering more kingdoms in the coming years. The Oniwaya of Iwaya, Oba Suleiman Owolabi Oloko, welcomed the campaign, noting his previous interventions in SGBV cases and the positive impact of this sensitization for his community.
Mrs. Ajibola Ijimakinwa, State Project Coordinator of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Program, reiterated the need for traditional rulers’ involvement and community awareness to eradicate SGBV.
