The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has called for collaboration between the Lagos State University and the Alumni Association to drive sustainable progress and create a more just, equitable, and prosperous society for all.
He made the call on Saturday in his keynote address at the 2024 Annual General Meeting of the Lagos State University Alumni Association held at the MRC Hall, LASUCOM, Ikeja with the theme: "Collaborating for Societal Progress: The Role of Government, Universities, and Alumni in Advancing Society".
The Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. 'Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, said the collaboration with Universities and Alumni would go a long way in creating solutions that address societal challenges and empower our communities.
This, he said, can be achieved through Joint Funding Initiatives to support scholarships, research, and infrastructure, and policy advocacy by leveraging the intellectual capital of universities and alumni to influence decision-making. He also mentioned Grassroots Community Engagement using education as a tool for social transformation.
While reaffirming his administration’s commitment to education and describing it as a bedrock of societal development, he praised the University's role in producing graduates who have contributed significantly to the development of Lagos State and Nigeria.
He said, “Lagos State University, like the state that birthed it, is a beacon of excellence, fostering innovation, critical thinking, and the nurturing of talents that propel societal growth".
He also highlighted the investments made under the T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus Developmental Agenda, including the upgrade of facilities, digital transformation, and teacher training programmes in Lagos State’s public education system. He noted that LASU, as a leading institution, exemplifies the government’s vision for making Lagos a hub of innovation and learning.
Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the impressive accomplishments of LASU alumni, many of whom occupy prominent positions in governance, industry, and academia. He encouraged them to give back through mentorship programmes, financial contributions, and partnerships that link academic knowledge to practical societal needs.
The alumni community is one of LASU’s most valuable assets known to inspire current students and symbolize the transformative potential of education.
