Braille Day:Lagos NYCN Physically Challenged Directorate celebrates day, empower members

 


The Directorate of the Physically Challenged of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos State Chapter joins the global community in celebrating International Braille Day.


The Braille Day is celebrated annually in commemoration of the visually impaired persons on January 4th. This day honors the birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille system, which aids learning for the visually impaired.


According to the director of the directorate of physically challenged persons of the Lagos NYCN, Comrade (Barr) Ibrahim Akinremi (aka Toplaw) the day is set aside to appreciate and encourage all visually impaired persons to brace up the challenge and become better version of themselves.

He said; "As we mark this significant day, we recognize the importance of Braille in empowering visually impaired individuals to read, write, and participate fully in society. Braille has been a game-changer in promoting literacy, independence, and inclusivity.


In Lagos, our directorate remains committed to promoting the welfare and well-being of persons with disabilities, including those who are visually impaired. We advocate for equal access to education, employment, and social opportunities, and work to break barriers that hinder their full participation."


Akinremi said as part of efforts at empowering the visually impaired, the directorate is distributing Braille materials assistive technologies to visually impaired persons.

He said; "as part of our effort to support the visually impaired, we are distributing Braille materials and assistive technologies to visually impaired students and individuals.

We are also organising a capacity-building programs for teachers and caregivers to support Braille literacy. As well as Advocacy for inclusive education and employment policies for all."


To achieve the set goals, the director appeal to all stakeholders to support the directorate in actualising it's goals of lifting physically challenged persons out of their challenges and uplift their spirit.


"We urge all stakeholders, including government agencies, private organizations, and individuals, to join us in promoting Braille literacy and supporting the empowerment of visually impaired individuals," he said.


The directorate will on Saturday,  25th of January organised a Braille reading and writing competition for the students of the Pacelli school of the Blind in Surulere.
