An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has granted bail to Naomi Silekunola (the former wife of the Ooni of Ife), Oriyomi Hamzat (owner of Agidigbo FM), and Abdullahi Fasasi (Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun).
Justice Kamorudeen Olawoyin approved the bail on Monday. Oriyomi Hamzat’s bail was set at ₦10 million, requiring two sureties. The court also instructed that his radio station must not air any news about the case.
The accused had applied for bail the previous Tuesday but were kept in custody until the court’s decision on Monday. Their lawyers argued that they were not planning to run away and were ready to cooperate with the investigation. However, the Oyo State Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, opposed the bail, emphasizing the seriousness of the case and the need for justice for the victims.
Adekunle Shobaloju (SAN), Oriyomi Hamzat’s lawyer, confirmed that they applied for bail while waiting for the trial, with the court deciding on January 13th.
The case involves a tragic stampede during a children’s party at Islamic High School, Bashorun, in December 2024. The incident led to the deaths of at least 35 children. Governor Seyi Makinde has called for those responsible to be prosecuted, although he has not objected to the bail decision in this case.
