Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has denied any involvement in the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly
Obasa was impeached on Monday, January 13, 2025, following allegations of gross misconduct, corruption, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement. The impeachment was endorsed by 32 members of the Assembly.
Responding to the development, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the impeachment as entirely a legislative affair, affirming the Assembly’s autonomy in managing its internal matters.
Through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu stressed that the state government had no role in the process. “This is purely a legislative matter, handled solely by the Assembly. The governor had no involvement whatsoever,” Akosile said in an interview with The Punch.
He further emphasized the importance of the separation of powers outlined in Nigeria’s constitution, which clearly delineates the functions of the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary.Cultural tours
Obasa, who had held the position of Speaker since 2015, was impeached after lawmakers accused him of several infractions, including financial improprieties, which reportedly created tensions within the Assembly.
Following his removal, Mojisola Meranda, the former Deputy Speaker, was unanimously elected as the new Speaker, marking a historic milestone as the first substantive female Speaker in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
While Governor Sanwo-Olu has refrained from commenting on Obasa’s tenure, insiders suggest he is optimistic about fostering a more collaborative relationship with the new Assembly leadership.
