The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that the Federal Government has sanctioned a temporary closure of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA) in Ibadan. This decision is primarily due to ongoing upgrade works aimed at enhancing the airport’s facilities.
According to Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has closed both the runway and the airport itself in accordance with regulations set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
Mrs. Orah elaborated that this initiative is part of a broader effort by the Oyo State government to elevate Ibadan Airport from a domestic facility to an international one. The upgrade involves various improvements and remodeling projects currently in progress.
She emphasized that adhering to aviation safety standards is paramount, making this closure necessary to ensure the safety of passengers and airport personnel alike. FAAN has requested understanding and cooperation from all airport users and stakeholders during this period, reinforcing their commitment to maintaining safe skies, secure airports, and seamless travel experiences.
The temporary closure of the airport is a strategic move aligned with ongoing upgrades aimed at enhancing its operational capacity while ensuring compliance with international safety standards.
