NRC Hosts Ogun State Commissioner for Transportation, Deepens Rail Development Collaboration

The management team of the Nigerian Railway Corporation  (NRC )welcomed the Honourable Commissioner for Transportation, Ogun State, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, and his team to discuss collaborative opportunities in rail infrastructure development.

During the meeting, the Commissioner highlighted Ogun State’s ambitious rail development plan, emphasizing the state’s commitment to integrating rail transportation as a core component of its infrastructural strategy under the ISEYA development framework. He underscored the state’s willingness to align its transportation goals with the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Plan of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with NRC playing a key role in driving this vision.

A significant aspect of the discussion revolved around Ogun State’s long-term objective of leveraging Standard Gauge Rail to enhance the movement of goods. The Commissioner stressed that the state government envisions a rail system that will facilitate seamless cargo shipments from Ogun to various regions across the federation, ultimately boosting commerce, industrialization, and economic integration.

The NRC management commended the Ogun State Ministry of Transportation for its foresight and strategic alignment with the federal government’s infrastructural development agenda. The team also encouraged Ogun State to key into NRC’s “Rail in the State” Initiative, an ongoing program that seeks to support state governments in developing viable rail transportation networks. This initiative is gaining momentum, with Plateau State set to launch its rail integration in the coming days, while Bauchi and Borno States are also in advanced discussions for their rail projects.

Furthermore, NRC urged Ogun State to  explore and optimize the existing Narrow Gauge corridors within its territory in addition to its extensive plan on the Lagos Ibadan national rail line for more connectivity and lay a solid foundation for a fully standardized rail network.

In conclusion, the NRC reaffirmed its commitment to providing full technical and operational support to Ogun State in positioning the region as a model for rail-driven economic transformation. By working closely with the Ogun State government, the NRC aims to create an efficient and sustainable rail system that will ease transportation, boost economic activities, and improve the overall quality of life for Nigerians.
