The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Murtala Muhammed Area Command (MMAC), recorded a revenue increase of 0.61% in the first quarter of 2025, generating ₦45.77 billion. This marks a modest yet meaningful improvement compared to the same period in 2024.
The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Michael Awe, disclosed this during a press briefing held on Wednesday, 16 April 2025, at the Command’s headquarters in Ikeja.
He attributed the growth to improved compliance among stakeholders, strict enforcement of trade regulations, and proactive efforts to block revenue leakages.
“This performance was driven by enhanced stakeholder compliance, constant monitoring, enforcement of trade laws, and timely interventions to seal identified loopholes,” he said.
Comptroller Awe commended officers and men of the Command for their diligence and vigilance, noting their contributions were key to surpassing last year’s figures.
In its anti-smuggling operations, the Command made notable seizures worth over ₦132.46 million. These included four packages of immigration camouflage uniforms, 19 Motorola walkie-talkies, and three packages of Colorado (a synthetic cannabinoid), a prohibited narcotic substance.
“These seizures were enabled by intelligence sharing, continuous profiling, and the alertness of our officers. Let me reiterate that the Command remains resolute in frustrating all forms of illicit trade through the Murtala Muhammed Area Command,” the CAC stated.
On stakeholder relations, Awe highlighted ongoing collaboration with other security agencies and the trading community as essential to sustaining the Command’s achievements. He said regular engagement, sensitisation, and feedback mechanisms have fostered transparency and mutual trust.
The CAC reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustaining momentum in revenue generation while intensifying anti-smuggling efforts.
He also appreciated the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for providing the strategic leadership that has propelled the Command’s success.
