The Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Barrister 'Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, has expressed confidence that the Southwest region holds the potential to become the largest economy in Nigeria if the region’s transport systems by rail, road, sea, and air are harmonised and efficiently developed across all six states.
Speaking at the Southwest Secretaries to the State Governments Forum held in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Salu-Hundeyin emphasised the urgent need to strengthen rail transport in the region. She noted that integrating the various modes of transportation would not only save time but also enhance safety and productivity across the region.
“It is achievable,” she asserted, citing Lagos State as a working model. “Lagos has demonstrated the benefits of a functional multimodal transport system, and we are still pushing beyond our current success to achieve more.”
While acknowledging the challenges involved in building such a comprehensive transport network, she encouraged her counterparts not to be deterred. “The opportunities and benefits far outweigh the obstacles. By fostering connectivity within and between Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, and Osun States, we can create a unified and coordinated region that works for the collective good of our people.”
The Forum, themed: "Strategic Partnership for Regional Development," was convened by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN Commission). Discussions focused on actionable strategies for regional infrastructure development, particularly the creation of an enabling environment for rail transport.
In his address, the Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, highlighted the importance of truth and integrity in leadership. He urged the Secretaries to the State Governments to speak truth to power respectfully, noting that their role is central to the effective implementation of government policies. He also commended Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for his leadership, both as Governor of Lagos State and as Chairman of the Southwest Governors’ Forum.
The host SSG, Prof. Habibat Omolara Adubiaro appreciated his colleagues for their commitment to their mandate and participation.
The event was attended by Ogun SSG, Hon. Tokunbo Talabi; Ondo SSG, Dr. Taiwo Fasosanti and Oyo State's SSG, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo while Osun State was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Office. Also present were Permanent Secretaries and Directors of Cabinet Offices from across the region, who participated in knowledge-sharing sessions facilitated by seasoned professionals.
