Another brilliant performance was recorded yesterday as indomitable hammer thrower, Michael Aiyegbeni, clinched gold in the men’s event, defying all odds and overcoming top contenders from other states.
Aiyegbeni expressed immense joy at the opportunity to compete at the 22nd National Sports Festival happening in Ogun State, describing it as an exceptional experience.
The Geology graduate said he was grateful to the "State of Aquatic Splendour" for giving him the platform to showcase his talent at Nigeria’s premier multi-sport event, emphasizing the pride he felt not just in representing Lagos, but in achieving success on such a grand stage.
"It's a wonderful feeling, not just doing it for myself. The feeling goes beyond excitement. Doing it on the platform of Lagos State makes it even more exceptional. Thank you very much for this opportunity," an elated Aiyegbeni stated.
Reacting after his podium finish at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Kuto, Aiyegbeni credited his intense preparation and the technical support from his coach for the victory. He noted that his can-do spirit and hard work eventually paid off.
"The competition was very tough, with strong contenders from other states. But at the end of the day, Michael Aiyegbeni for Lagos State made it possible," he said.
The gold medallist emphasized that hammer throw is a highly technical event that requires total focus. "Technique is very important. That’s what I focused on. It’s an event that challenges your mind, brain, strength, speed, and power."
He revealed that he initially took up hammer just for fun, but his growing passion for the sport has turned into something remarkable and extraordinary. He now looks forward to future competitions.
