In a bold move to tackle Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) at the grassroots level, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), in collaboration with the Ford Foundation, embarked on a comprehensive door-to-door sensitization campaign in Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area, Mushin, Lagos State, on July 7, 2025.
The initiative was designed to directly engage residents, raise awareness on the dangers and consequences of SGBV, and foster a collective zero-tolerance stance towards all forms of abuse. The campaign reflected DSVA's commitment to community-driven solutions, emphasizing that ending SGBV requires active participation from every member of society.
The sensitization targeted several critical touchpoints across the community. Places of worship included Masterpiece Church, Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, and the Unified Local Government Mosque, Odi-Olowo. Educational institutions visited were Awesome College, Ilupeju Junior and Senior Grammar School, and Estate Junior and Senior Grammar School. The team also engaged stakeholders at Ilupeju Park and Ladipo Market, alongside the Primary Healthcare Centre, Coker Centre, Odi-Olowo.
The outreach extended to key residential areas including Town Planning Road, Obokun Street, Olowogbowo Street, Lateef Jakande Street, Gbolade Adebanjo Street, Kolawole Shonibare Street, Olorunfemi Street, and Suramogaji Street.
The campaign successfully reached and sensitized over 10,000 community members, deepening public understanding of SGBV, its warning signs, and long-term consequences. Residents were encouraged to memorize and make use of DSVA’s toll-free reporting number: 08000-333-333.
This impactful outreach reinforces DSVA’s resolve to build a safer, more informed, and empowered society where survivors are supported, perpetrators are held accountable, and prevention is seen as a shared responsibility.
The Lagos State Government, through DSVA and strategic partnerships such as this with the Ford Foundation, continues to ensure that no community is left behind in the fight against gender-based violence.
