Breaking News: Senate Confirms Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan as INEC Chairman

The Nigerian Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The confirmation followed a screening session held in the Senate Chamber during a Committee of the Whole, where lawmakers engaged the nominee with a series of questions about his plans for strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system.

After responding to the lawmakers’ inquiries, Professor Amupitan was asked to take a bow and exit the chamber.

Following his departure, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved a motion to restore floor privileges earlier suspended during the screening — a motion seconded by the Minority Leader and subsequently adopted through a voice vote.

Presiding over the session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio then put the confirmation of Professor Amupitan to a vote, which was unanimously approved by the lawmakers.

> “The nomination of Joash Ojo Amupitan for appointment as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission is hereby confirmed,” Akpabio declared.

With this confirmation, Professor Amupitan officially becomes the new head of Nigeria’s electoral body, succeeding his predecessor in overseeing the nation’s democratic processes.
