Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, has passed away at a hospital in Saudi Arabia. He was 71 years old and had been in poor health, which led to his retirement in June 2022.
Muhammad served as the Chief Justice of Nigeria from January 2019 until his resignation, citing ill health. During his tenure, he was known for his integrity, humility, and commitment to justice. He was a towering figure in Nigeria's judiciary, exemplifying the highest ideals of the Bench, including fairness, courage, and fidelity to the rule of law
The Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS) described his death as a monumental loss to the Nigerian judiciary, the legal profession, the Muslim Ummah, and the nation at large. Muhammad was a mentor to many young Muslim law students and was known for his support, moral guidance, and openness to their aspirations
Funeral arrangements are still being finalized, but his remains are expected to be returned to Nigeria for burial in accordance with Islamic rites in his home state of Bauchi
