The Nigerian Government has announced a ban on wood and charcoal export and allied products nationwide.
Hon. Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, who made the announcement on Wednesday during the 18th Session of the National Council on Environment (NCE) in Katsina said the Executive Order signed by President Bola Tinubu was intended to tackle the problem of deforestation and enhance environmental sustainability in the country.
He stated that the Executive Order automatically voids any existing licenses and permits for wood exportation and described it as part of efforts to tackle the triple planetary crisis namely climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
The announcement came as the NCE drew to a close with the Federal Government making a firm resolve to strengthen environmental governance.
The NCE had in attendance Federal and State Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the environment sector including the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).
