FRSC SAYS OVERSPEEDING, DANGEROUS OVERTAKING RESPONSIBLE FOR FATAL CRASH INVOLVING ANTHONY JOSHUA

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed the fatal road accident involving Nigerian-British boxing star, Anthony Joshua, to excessive speeding and unsafe overtaking on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

According to the Ogun State Sector Command, the crash occurred around noon on Monday, December 29, 2025, near the Sinoma axis of Sagamu.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a black Lexus Jeep conveying Joshua was travelling at high speed when the driver attempted a wrongful overtaking, lost control, and rammed into a stationary commercial Sinotruck properly parked by the roadside.

The impact claimed the lives of two occupants later confirmed to be Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach and his close friend/personal trainer.

One other person sustained injuries, while Anthony Joshua and another occupant escaped with minor injuries.

FRSC spokesperson, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, disclosed that the Corps received a distress call shortly after the incident and deployed rescue operatives within three minutes.

This rapid response ensured swift evacuation of victims, effective traffic control, and prevention of secondary crashes.

The injured victim was taken to a nearby medical facility, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Livewell Morgue in Ajaka, Sagamu.

The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) has been notified for further investigation and documentation.

Reacting to the tragedy, FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished Anthony Joshua and the injured survivor a speedy recovery.

KEY TAKEAWAY:
The FRSC emphasized that speeding and dangerous overtaking remain leading causes of fatal accidents on Nigerian highways, particularly on high-speed routes like the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The agency urged motorists to exercise patience, obey speed limits, avoid reckless manoeuvres, and prioritize safety, especially during the festive travel period, while reaffirming its commitment to road safety through rapid emergency response and continuous public sensitization.
