The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has hit a new high-water mark in its mission for inclusive sports development, hosting a landmark celebration for “Lagos Swim Mums and Dads” alongside the flag-off of a strategic initiative, the Lagos Swimming Coastal Series Clinic and Competition, aimed at empowering and bringing aquatic opportunities to children in Lagos State’s riverine and coastal communities.
The dual celebration took place at the “Deep Dive & Lively Splash Time” swimming fiesta held at the newly renovated Rowe Park Swimming Pool, Yaba, where swim mums and dads, the often-unsung heroes behind young athletes’ success, received recognition for their sacrifices, investments, and steadfast support of their children’s aquatic journeys.
Speaking on the dual significance of the celebration and the new riverine initiative, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, remarked: “Today, we are acknowledging that the journey to the podium begins at home, which is why we celebrate our incredible ‘Swim Mums and Dads,’ whose dedication is the bedrock of our success.” Fatodu continued: “Governor Sanwo-Olu has invested unprecedented resources in sports infrastructure across Lagos State, from the renovation of the Rowe Park Swimming Pool to the development of community sports facilities in previously underserved areas. But infrastructure alone does not create equity, which is what inspired the collaboration between the commission and the organisers of the Lagos Swimming Coastal Series.”
The fiesta concluded with a showcase of the state’s National Youth Games (NYG) champions, providing a glimpse of the elite level of performance the athletes are now inspired to reach.
