The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has clarified that the building located at No.1, Oladele Odusanya, Off Ademulegun Street, Ireakari Estate, Oshodi-Isolo, which recently underwent partial demolition, had been under strict monitoring for several months due to its highly distressed condition. According to the Agency, several evacuation notices were duly served on the occupants long before the enforcement exercise.
LASBCA confirmed that the first notice was issued on 3rd March 2025, after a structural inspection revealed that the building posed a serious safety risk to residents and neighbouring properties.
Among the major concerns raised in the engineering report was a burst water pipe, which had been continuously soaking the main support pillars of the structure, further weakening its stability.
Despite repeated warnings and follow-up notices over a period of nine months, occupants of the building reportedly failed to comply with the evacuation directives.
Officials explained that the goal of the notices was to prevent avoidable loss of lives and property, in line with the state government’s mandate to ensure public safety through proactive building regulation.
With the building’s condition deteriorating further and residents refusing to vacate, LASBCA said it had no choice but to carry out a partial demolition to avert imminent danger. The agency stressed that the action became necessary after exhaustive attempts to secure voluntary compliance proved unsuccessful.
It was also noted that the served notices, alongside the structural assessment report, have been appended as evidence of due process. Additionally, images of the physical structure documenting its compromised state were included to further demonstrate the urgency of the intervention.
LASBCA reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and called on residents across the state to cooperate with safety directives, emphasizing that compliance with evacuation notices is essential in preventing tragedies associated with building collapse.
