LASCOPA ALERTS CONSUMERS AGAINST EXPLOITATION DURING FORTHCOMING FESTIVITIES

As Lagos braces for the yearly surge of activities associated with the December festivities, the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has issued a strong advisory, urging residents and visitors to remain cautious while patronising hotels, short-let apartments, restaurants, banks, supermarkets, online vendors and other service providers across the State

The Agency noted that the festive season typically witnesses an upsurge in business transactions, which unfortunately also provides opportunities for sharp practices, exploitation, and the circulation of substandard or expired products. LASCOPA, therefore, urged consumers to prioritise safety, insist on transparency, and ensure they receive full value for their money throughout the period.

Speaking on the rising complaints associated with accommodation providers during festive seasons, the General Manager of Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, Mr Afolabi Solebo, has cautioned hotels and short-let operators against hiding under rigid “no-refund” policies to take advantage of unsuspecting guests.

Solebo advised consumers to carefully read terms and conditions before making reservations, verify rooms physically or through authentic images, insist on receipts or digital proof of payment, and report cases where services fall below agreed standards.

He also raised concerns about the circulation of fake, expired, and repackaged items, especially alcoholic beverages, cosmetics, perfumes, children’s toys, electrical appliances and food items that often flood the market during this period. The Agency urged consumers to check expiry dates, confirm NAFDAC registration numbers, scrutinise packaging, and buy only from reputable or traceable vendors to avoid health risks and financial losses.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights and safety of consumers across Lagos, LASCOPA assured that its monitoring and enforcement activities would be intensified throughout the festive season to ensure compliance with consumer protection standards. It warned businesses to desist from exploitative practices, stressing that offenders would face appropriate sanctions.

LASCOPA also reminded the public of the various channels available for lodging complaints, adding that consumers can reach the Agency through its hotlines on 08124993895 and 09153894878 or visit the Head Office at 2B, Soji Adepegba Close, Off Allen Avenue Ikeja, as well as its annex offices in Badagry LGA, Ikorodu LGA, Isolo LCDA, Bariga LCDA, Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, and Ojo LGA. Complaints can also be submitted via email at lascopa@lagosstate.gov.ng, lasgcopa@gmail.com, or through its social media platforms on Facebook @ lascopa, Instagram @lasgcopa and X @lasgcopa.

The Agency urged all consumers to remain alert, make informed decisions and enjoy a safe, scam-free and fulfilling festive season in Lagos.
