.....As Gov leads State officials on inspection tour to Adiyan Phase II water project

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo - Olu on Friday  commissioned the One million gallons per day mini water works facility at Akilo area of the State.

Sanwo-Olu said the commissioning of the project is a fulfilment of a promise to restore dignity, promote health, and to provide the citizens access to clean and potable water that meets strict quality standards, which is a fundamental human right.

He said with an investment of over N776 Million Naira, the government had built a new, resilient, and sustainable system reiterating that his  administration is  committed to provide the citizens with clean and potable water in order to improve the standard of living across the metropolis

He explained that the Akilo waterworks was originally built in 2011 and gradually fell into poor condition saying the government awakened a change by collaborating with WaterAid and received funding support from Aqua Armani to embark on the rehabilitation project.

He stated that WaterAid is not only partnering with them  in Akilo but also working in other communities such as Ikorodu North, Ojodu, Agege, Mushin and Igando Ikotun LCDAs to deliver safe water supply and sanitation facilities.

He added that the investment will enhance the health of the children, strengthen the wellbeing of families and boost the overall productivity of the communities saying it forms a vital pillar of commitment to deliver immediate relief and targeted interventions to underserved areas.

"Let me assure every Lagosian that our vision for water sufficiency is deliberate, inclusive, and truly statewide; no community will be left behind; This facility now has a daily capacity of 4,500 cubic meters, providing potable water to an estimated 100,000 residents in this surrounding" he said.

He said the government had drilled new boreholes, replaced all electromechanical equipment, rehabilitated the distribution network, and installed 20 water kiosks which are public access points for safe water to ensure that even households without private connections can benefit from the expanded water supply system.

Sanwo- Olu  emphasized that the project is a direct testament to the unwavering commitment to the Health and Environment pillar of the THEMES+ Agenda saying there is no greater environmental good than clean water and there is no greater health imperative than preventing water-borne diseases.

He stated further that the intention is to replicate this in more communities around the State through such donor partnerships and the ongoing PPP for 7 of our Micro/Mini Waterworks adding that the government is also thinking big and for the long term.

He said  government is simultaneously driving progress on the Adiyan Phase II Waterworks, which is a strong part of the master plan to achieve water security for Lagos saying upon completion, the Adiyan phase II waterworks will add 70 million Gallons per Day (MGD) to our water supply capacity.

He said the water  plant will serve a significant portion of the metropolis, complementing the existing Adiyan I and Iju Waterworks saying the commissioning of the  waterworks directly aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly its commitment to improving the quality of life through expanded infrastructure, stronger public services, and equitable access to basic amenities.

He  said the administration has consistently emphasized that clean water, public health, and environmental sustainability are foundational to inclusive growth and by delivering safe, reliable water to underserved communities, the project translates those national priorities into tangible benefits for the people.

"By investing in modern water systems, expanding last-mile access points, and promoting equitable distribution, we are advancing a shared national vision: a Nigeria where every citizen—regardless of location or socio-economic background—can enjoy basic services that uphold dignity, support productivity, and inspire genuine hope for the future" he added.

The Governor expressed appreciation to the Country Director of WaterAid Nigeria, Ms. Evelyn Mere and Aqua Amani for the partnership saying he was  particularly encouraged by WaterAid’s  readiness to replicate the success in other parts of Lagos through the TeamWater and the One Lagos WASH programme.

He urged the community leaders and members  to protect the facility,

manage it wisely and see it as a vital asset for the collective well-being saying the water is a stream of hope , a flow of progress and the lifeblood of a healthier and more prosperous community.
