Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has reportedly been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged terrorism financing.
According to security sources, Malami was taken into custody after arms and ammunition were allegedly discovered at his residence in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. The weapons were reportedly intercepted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during an earlier search and subsequently handed over to the DSS.
Investigations revealed that Malami was arrested outside the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, shortly after perfecting his bail conditions in an ongoing ₦8 billion fraud case instituted by the EFCC.
Security sources further alleged that Malami was working in collaboration with another former minister who has now been placed on a watch list. The collaborator is said to be operating from abroad, where he allegedly established a base for terror-related activities targeted at Nigeria.
One intelligence source disclosed that the DSS had monitored Malami for nearly two weeks and moved in once he stepped out of the correctional facility.
Authorities also hinted that diplomatic steps could be taken to secure the repatriation of the ex-minister collaborator, should he continue to evade return.
Justice Emeka Nwite had earlier granted Malami and others bail on January 7.
Security agencies stressed that terrorism and its financing are grave global crimes and maintained that no individual—regardless of status—would be shielded from investigation.
