The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) have held a strategic coordination meeting to finalise the framework for the controlled demolition of the 23-storey Great Nigeria Insurance building on Martins Street, Lagos Island, which was gutted by fire on 24th December 2025.
The meeting was held in line with the approval and directive of the Lagos State Governor that the demolition be carried out strictly with technical expertise and full stakeholder involvement.
NEMA team was led by the Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Bature Usman, while the session was chaired by the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osayintolu.
Key focus areas included responder safety, information management, public protection and environmental safeguards.
It was agreed that demolition will commence only after all security, medical, communication and environmental safety measures have been fully put in place. Public safety remains the top priority.
NEMA urges the public to rely on verified information from official channels as updates will be provided in due course.
