Rivers Assembly Begins Impeachment Proceedings Against Gov Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Siminalayi Fubara, governor of the state.

The legislature kicked off the process at plenary on Thursday, January 8, 2026.

The lawmakers are accusing Fubara and his deputy of gross misconduct.

This comes amid the ongoing political rivalry between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Recall that the majority of the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly are loyal to the FCT Minister, who has sworn to work against Fubara in 2027.

Tension arising from the power struggle between Wike and Fubara has created uncertainties and anxieties in the oil-rich Niger Delta state.

Former Navy Chief Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas was appointed to serve as caretaker to run the affairs of Rivers State for an initial six months.

At the expiration of the 6-month emergency rule on September 17, Tinubu lifted the suspension of Fubara and others.

The president said the state of emergency, first proclaimed on March 18, 2025, was necessary to arrest the “total paralysis of governance” that had gripped Rivers at the time.

“It therefore gives me great pleasure to declare that the emergency in Rivers State of Nigeria shall end with effect from midnight today.

“The Governor, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, the deputy governor, Her Excellency Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the speaker,
