The Oyo State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters has directed the immediate coronation of three newly elevated high chiefs in Ibadan, citing the need to preserve tradition and prevent political speculation.

In a letter dated March 26, 2026, addressed to the Olubadan, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo, emphasized the urgency of conferring beaded crowns on the affected chiefs.

The chiefs listed include Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin, Sarafadeen Abindin Ali, and Kola Babalola. According to the ministry, their elevation within the Olubadan-in-Council necessitates immediate crowning in line with Ibadan’s traditional system.

The government warned that any delay could lead to “unnecessary insinuations” suggesting political interference, which could undermine the integrity of the traditional institution in Ibadanland.

To address this, the coronation ceremony has been scheduled for April 3, 2026, at Mapo Hall, a historic venue known for hosting major cultural and civic events in the city.

The ministry also noted that the move is part of ongoing efforts to compile an updated list of high chiefs and Baales eligible to wear beaded crowns across Ibadanland.

Observers say the directive underscores the delicate balance between governance and traditional authority in Oyo State, where chieftaincy matters remain a sensitive and influential aspect of local administration.
