First Indigenous Coach of the Super Eagles, Festus Onigbinde D!es at 88

Former Super Eagles coach and AFCON silver medallist, Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde has  passed away on Monday, 9th March, 2025 at the age of 88.

This was contained in a statement issued by Mrs. Bolade Adesuyi on behalf of the family.

According to the statement “With great gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of this great man, a Modakeke High Chief, the first indigenous Nigerian Super Eagles football coach, father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, High Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, who passed on to the great beyond a couple of minutes ago.

“We thank God for the fulfilled life and your contributions to the Nigerian nation and the world as an unequalled football coach.

“We pray that your soul will rest perfectly in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ.

“Final funeral arrangements will be communicated later,” she wrote.

Nigeria's first indigenous coach, Festus Onigbinde had two stints with the Super Eagles of Nigeria. The first was 1982 to 1984.Then, the second was in 2002, from January to September.

In his first stints, Onigbinde led the Super Eagles to a silver🥈medal at the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations where Nigeria lost to Cameroon in the Final; He had two wins, two draws, and one loss. 

Then, in his second stint, Onigbinde also led the Super Eagles to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan; He had three wins, three losses, and two draws.
