NCoS, BRITISH HOME OFFICE STRENGTHEN NON-CUSTODIAL MEASURES IN LAGOS

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Lagos State Command, has reinforced its strategic partnership with the Home Office following a high-level engagement held on 30th March, 2026, in Lagos.

The engagement featured a delegation of United Kingdom-based trainers and focused on strengthening the implementation of non-custodial measures as well as advancing effective alternatives to incarceration within Nigeria’s criminal justice system.

During the session, the British delegation shared operational insights and global best practices drawn from the United Kingdom’s experience in the administration of non-custodial sentencing. In response, officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service provided an overview of Nigeria’s legal and policy frameworks, alongside operational strategies guiding the implementation of community-based corrections in Lagos State.

Deliberations centred on key correctional objectives, including public safety and protection, reduction of recidivism, offender rehabilitation and reintegration, victim support mechanisms, effective sentence management, and enforcement of court orders.

The engagement further underscored the importance of international collaboration in driving reforms within the correctional system. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to sustained partnership, capacity building, and knowledge exchange aimed at strengthening community corrections and enhancing justice delivery in Nigeria.
