Lagos To Strengthen Effort on Education in Sports Through International Partnership

The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) is charting a clear new direction in its sports development agenda, moving to integrate academic excellence with athletic ambition through a strategic international partnership with UK-based educator, Milverton Education.

This direction gained traction following a strategic engagement with Mr Jim Hewer, Co-Founder of Milverton Education, who met with the Director General of the Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu to outline a collaborative framework that links local talent to global academic pathways. The engagement signals a deliberate shift toward building structured opportunities for young athletes beyond competition alone.

At the core of the proposed partnership is a focus on access and inclusion, especially for promising athletes  from disadvantaged backgrounds, by combining specialised training with educational opportunities.

Speaking on the importance of the collaboration, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission stressed that the state’s ambition goes beyond podium success.

“We are pleased to be having this conversation at a time when more young people are showing interest in sports. We recognise that not all of them will go on to become professional athletes competing at the highest level. Education allows them to explore other career paths within the sports ecosystem, such as sports marketing, sports psychology, sports medicine, coaching, and sports management. This approach ensures that their passion for sports can still translate into meaningful and sustainable careers,” he said.

As discussions advance toward formalisation, the partnership is set to shape a pipeline that produces not only stronger athletes but also skilled professionals who can contribute across the sports industry.
