The Ondo State Police Command, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, psc(+), mnips, is pleased to announce the establishment of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing the Command’s capacity to effectively combat violent crimes and strengthen public safety across the State.
The Unit was unveiled during a capacity-building training programme held at the Police Officers’ Mess, Alagbaka, Akure, on 29th April, 2026.
This development aligns with the ongoing reforms of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM and reflects a deliberate shift toward proactive, intelligence-led, and specialized policing. The VCRU is specifically mandated to respond swiftly and decisively to incidents of violent crime, including armed robbery, kidnapping, cult-related violence, and other threats to public peace, while upholding the principles of human rights and the rule of law.
To ensure operational efficiency and rapid response, the Unit has been strategically structured into three operational zones:
• North Zone, with its office located at Upeme axis along the Owo Expressway;
• Central Zone, adopting the SWAT Office in Akure and will serve as the coordinating hub of the Unit;
• South Zone, with its base around the Ore axis, covering the southern senatorial district.
Personnel deployed to the Unit were carefully selected based on proven competence, professionalism, and operational experience.
They have also undergone rigorous and specialized training to equip them with the necessary skills required to effectively tackle violent crimes while maintaining the highest standards of conduct and respect for human rights.
The Commissioner of Police described the establishment of the VCRU as a significant milestone in strengthening operational effectiveness and restoring public confidence in policing. He emphasized that the Unit will operate within a disciplined, accountable, and well-coordinated framework, with clearly defined roles and a strong focus on results-driven policing.
The Command expresses its profound appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu psc(+), NPM for this visionary initiative, which underscores the commitment of the Force leadership to modern policing standards and the safety of all citizens.
Reaffirming the Command’s resolve to rid the State of violent criminal elements, CP Lawal urged members of the public to support the VCRU by providing timely, credible, and actionable information. He assured that the Unit will operate with the highest level of integrity, strict adherence to human rights standards, and zero tolerance for misconduct.
The Ondo State Police Command remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and calls on all residents to continue partnering with the Police in building a safer and more secure environment for all
