As part of the Lagos State Government's commitment to ensuring that families of deceased public servants are adequately catered for, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved the disbursement of N799,840,120 to 148 beneficiaries of deceased staff of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and Local Government Councils. The payment represents the first tranche of insurance benefits for the year 2026.
Announcing the approval at the presentation ceremony, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Dr Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje, expressed appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu for consistently prioritising the welfare of public servants and for his unwavering commitment to fulfilling the State Government's obligations to its workforce.
Dr Agbaje disclosed that since 2017, the Lagos State Government has disbursed over N5 billion in insurance benefits to beneficiaries of deceased SUBEB and Local Government staff across the State. According to him, the continuous disbursement of these benefits helps to alleviate the financial challenges often faced by families following the loss of their loved ones.
He also commended LASACO Assurance Plc and Haggai Insurance Brokers Limited for their steadfast commitment and support in ensuring seamless and prompt access to insurance benefits by beneficiaries.
While commiserating with the families of the deceased staff present at the event, Dr Agbaje prayed that Almighty God would grant them the strength, comfort and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss of their loved ones. He further urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the benefits, particularly towards the welfare, upkeep and education of the children and dependants left behind.
The Special Adviser also appealed to Desk Officers to continue to demonstrate diligence and professionalism by ensuring that all required documentation, especially death certificates and other relevant records, are properly verified and processed to facilitate the timely payment of benefits.
In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mrs Kikelomo Bolarinwa, who was represented by the Director of Local Government Administration, Mrs Margaret Adegelu, reaffirmed Governor Sanwo-Olu's commitment to the welfare of the Lagos State workforce. She noted that the deceased officers had made invaluable contributions to the growth and development of Lagos State and urged beneficiaries to invest the benefits wisely in ways that would positively impact their families and preserve the legacies of the deceased.
In their goodwill messages, the Chairman of SUBEB, Dr Hakeem Babatunde Shittu, represented by Mrs Taibat Olona; the Managing Director of LASACO Assurance Plc, Mr Ademoye Shobo, represented by the Assistant General Manager, Corporate Institution, Mrs Jumoke Koleosho; and the Managing Director of Haggai Insurance Brokers Limited, Mr Olusegun Amure, commended the Lagos State Government for its consistency in the payment of insurance benefits to beneficiaries of deceased staff. They also encouraged beneficiaries to utilise the funds prudently for the benefit of their families and dependants.
In his vote of thanks, one of the beneficiaries, Mr Promise Ekere Nnamadi, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for honouring the memories of their departed loved ones through the payment of the benefits. He assured the Government that beneficiaries would make good use of the funds received in order to sustain the legacies of the deceased and support their families.
