"Massive Manhunt Underway Across South London"
A major manhunt is underway in the United Kingdom after a Nigerian man reportedly escaped from a prison transport vehicle in southeast London, prompting urgent warnings from law enforcement authorities.
The fugitive, identified as 25-year-old Temitope Segun, is being actively sought by the Metropolitan Police following a dramatic escape on Monday evening.
According to police reports, Segun was being transported from Bromley Magistrates' Court to HMP Thameside when he allegedly assaulted a prison transport officer and managed to flee from custody.
Authorities said he was last seen at approximately 6:40 p.m. in the area of Woolwich High Street, southeast London, shortly after escaping from the prison van.
The incident has triggered a large-scale search operation as investigators work to locate and apprehend the escaped prisoner.
Private security contractor Serco, which was responsible for transporting Segun at the time of the escape, confirmed its involvement in the incident and stated that an internal investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the breach.
Police have released a description of the suspect and are urging members of the public to remain vigilant.
At the time of his escape, Segun was reportedly wearing a black jacket, black trousers, and black trainers. Investigators believe he may have connections to several areas across south London, including Plumstead, Abbey Wood, and Woolwich, locations that are now receiving increased attention as part of the ongoing search efforts.
Detective Sergeant Claudine Manning, who is leading the operation to recapture Segun, emphasized the urgency of the situation.
"My team of dedicated officers are working around the clock to trace and apprehend Temitope Segun," she said.
"It is imperative that the public contact police via 999 if they see him or know where he may be."
Authorities have also issued a strong warning to residents not to approach the fugitive under any circumstances. Instead, anyone who spots him or has information about his whereabouts is being urged to immediately contact emergency services.
The escape has raised serious questions about prisoner transport security procedures and how an individual in custody was able to allegedly overpower a guard and evade capture in a busy part of London.
As the search continues, police remain focused on tracking down Segun and returning him to custody.
