… Says Tech Is Expanding Access To Quality Education
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has congratulated the pioneer graduating class of MIVA Open University, describing their achievement as a powerful demonstration that technology is breaking traditional barriers to higher education and creating new pathways to success.
Speaking at the University's maiden convocation ceremony held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts, Iganmu, Lagos, Mr. Governor said the occasion marked not only the graduation of the institution's first set of students but also the validation of a bold vision to make quality university education more accessible, flexible, and relevant to the demands of the modern world.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. 'Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin commended the graduands' resilience, discipline, and determination that made them pioneers of a new learning model that is redefining higher education in Nigeria.
He said "You are more than graduates, you are trailblazers. Your success has shown that learning can thrive beyond the traditional classroom and that technology can open doors to knowledge and opportunity for countless others".
Sanwo-Olu praised the leadership and founders of MIVA Open University for their foresight in embracing innovation and digital learning, adding that the institution's growth reflects the immense possibilities that emerge when vision is matched with purposeful execution.
He added that the University's commitment to technology-driven education aligns closely with the Lagos State Government's vision of building a knowledge-based economy powered by innovation, creativity, and human capital development.
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted several initiatives of the State Government aimed at empowering young people, including Lagos Innovates, the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), and the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA), all designed to equip youths with the skills, resources, and leadership capacity needed to succeed in an increasingly digital and competitive world.
He urged the graduates to embrace entrepreneurship, innovation, and continuous learning as they embark on the next phase of their lives. "The future belongs to those who are adaptable, creative, and willing to learn, relearn, and innovate. Rather than waiting for opportunities, be prepared to create them. Let integrity guide your decisions, because character remains the foundation of enduring success," he advised.
The Governor also paid tribute to parents, guardians, and lecturers whose sacrifices, guidance, and support contributed to the success of the graduating students. He encouraged MIVA Open University to continue strengthening its innovative approach to learning, noting that the future of education will increasingly depend on institutions capable of combining quality, accessibility, flexibility, and global relevance.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, described MIVA Open University's maiden graduation ceremony as a testament to the fact that learning is no longer confined to the four walls of a physical classroom. He noted that the institution exemplifies the democratisation of knowledge by providing flexible access to quality education without compromising academic standards.
The Keynote Speaker and Sarkin Kano, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, emphasised that education is a fundamental right and not a privilege, warning that any nation that denies its citizens access to education ultimately undermines its own development. He commended MIVA Open University for bringing education closer to learners wherever they may be, describing the model as an effective approach to expanding access to learning. Sanusi also underscored the importance of educating the girl-child, noting that it remains one of the most critical drivers of sustainable national growth and development.
The Chancellor, MIVA Open University, Mr. Sim Shagaya expressed confidence that the pioneer graduates would distinguish themselves in their chosen careers and contribute meaningfully to national development.
