Nigeria's entertainment and academic communities are mourning the passing of renowned Nollywood actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and scholar, Dr. Kola Oyewo, who died at the age of 80.
Confirming the sad news on Friday via Instagram, actor Kunle Afod paid tribute to the late thespian, writing: "Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come."
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Dr. Oyewo began his illustrious acting career in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. Over the decades, he became one of the most respected and celebrated figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigerian cinema.
He gained widespread acclaim for his unforgettable portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi's classic play, The Gods Are Not to Blame, a performance that earned him recognition across Africa's theatre landscape.
Throughout a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, Dr. Oyewo featured in numerous acclaimed productions, including Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, Super Story, and several Yoruba-language films that played a significant role in shaping Nigeria's movie industry.
Beyond the stage and screen, he was a distinguished academic. He obtained a doctorate degree in Drama from the University of Ibadan and lectured at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer's University, and Elizade University.
Through his scholarship, mentorship, and dedication to the arts, Dr. Kola Oyewo nurtured generations of actors, playwrights, filmmakers, and scholars, leaving behind a lasting legacy that will continue to influence Nigeria's theatre, film, and academic sectors for years to come.
