President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration has continued to expand youth empowerment and skills acquisition across the country as eighty five young people in Borno State graduated under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET, programme of the Federal Ministry of Education.
The beneficiaries successfully completed training organised by the Wondering Child Reform Initiative, an implementing organisation handling the programme in Borno State, with the support of the Federal Ministry of Education.
The graduation ceremony took place on Saturday, 11 July 2026, at Government Day Secondary School, 1000 Housing Estate, Maiduguri, where government officials, education stakeholders, facilitators and family members gathered to celebrate the achievements of the first batch of trainees.
The Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET introduced by the Federal Ministry of Education, is a five year national initiative scheduled to run from 2025 to 2030. It is designed to equip unemployed Nigerians, particularly young people, with practical vocational skills that will promote self reliance, entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods while reducing unemployment across the country.
Speaking at the ceremony, the representative of the Federal Ministry of Education, Mustapha Baba Bolori, said the programme reflects the commitment of the Tinubu administration to developing the nation's human capital through technical and vocational education. He explained that the initiative will continue over the next five years to ensure that more Nigerian youths acquire marketable skills capable of improving their livelihoods.
The first cohort in Borno State produced eighty five graduates, including thirty two trained in fashion design and garment making, twenty eight in beauty and cosmetology, and twenty five in computer hardware repair. The graduates also received start up kits to enable them establish their own businesses and become financially independent.
Training Manager of the programme, Yusuf Adamu, commended Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for providing the peaceful and enabling environment that made the successful implementation of the Federal Government initiative possible in Borno State. He noted that the support of the state government has contributed significantly to the smooth execution of the training.
Also speaking, the Director of Quality Assurance at the Borno State Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Isa Aliyu, urged the graduates to make productive use of the skills and equipment provided to them. He encouraged them to become employers of labour and contribute positively to the social and economic development of their communities.
The Executive Director of the Wondering Child Reform Initiative, Hajiya Maryam Yakubu Mustapha, alongside the Founder of TVET, Alhaji Shuaibu Ahmed Lawan, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting skills development and youth empowerment in line with the objectives of the Federal Government.
Other dignitaries at the event included the Principal of Government Day Secondary School, 1000 Housing Estate, Fatima Gajibo, facilitators, community leaders and other education stakeholders.
One of the beneficiaries, Emmanuel Ibrahim, described the training as life changing. He said that before joining the programme he had no knowledge of computer hardware repair but can now diagnose and repair computers independently, expressing appreciation to the organisers and the Federal Government for giving him a new opportunity to build a sustainable career.
