The Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) has urged residents of Ikorodu Division to register and ensure that their details are captured in the State’s residents’ database, stressing that accurate population data is essential for effective government planning and the provision of infrastructure and social services.
The Agency made the call during a sensitisation campaign and town hall meeting held on Thursday at the Palace of His Royal Majesty, Oba Dr. AbdulHakeem Adeoriyomi Oyebo, Obateru of Egbin Kingdom.
Speaking at the event, the General Manager of LASRRA, Mrs. Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola, explained that the Agency was taking registration closer to residents by working with traditional institutions and communities to make the process more accessible.
She emphasised that every resident of Lagos counts and should be counted, noting that reliable residents’ data helps the government better understand the population, identify community needs, and make informed decisions on infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other social services.
According to her, LASRRA is expanding its registration activities beyond conventional registration centres to locations where residents already interact with essential services, including schools, healthcare facilities and vaccination centres.
Mrs Adebiyi-Abiola said LASRRA was giving particular attention to children and students, especially pupils in private schools, following the directive requiring LASRRA registration for students in private schools.
She explained that LASRRA, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and private schools, was working to register students free of charge, with a target of capturing students across private schools in Lagos State within the next year.
The General Manager noted that a comprehensive database of students would provide the government with reliable information to support planning and the improvement of educational services across the State.
She further disclosed that the Agency was working towards deploying technology that would enable schools to conveniently schedule registration visits, thereby making the process more seamless.
Addressing concerns about LASRRA identity cards, Mrs. Adebiyi-Abiola explained that printed cards had been distributed to local government areas closest to the addresses supplied by residents at the point of registration.
She advised residents who had previously registered to check the availability of their cards using the Agency’s short code, 347641#, with the telephone number used during registration, or through LASRRA’s official communication channels.
On old registrations, she clarified that residents do not lose their LASRRA registration numbers. However, those whose names, addresses or other personal circumstances have changed are required to undergo validation to update their details, photographs and fingerprints while retaining their original registration numbers.
She also disclosed that the Agency was reviewing the existing plastic card system with a view to introducing a more useful and cost-effective card that could potentially support public transportation services, including the BRT and rail system.
In his remarks, His Royal Majesty, Oba Dr. AbdulHakeem Adeoriyomi Oyebo, Obateru of Egbin Kingdom, commended LASRRA for taking the sensitisation programme to the community.
The Monarch, who disclosed that he had personally registered with LASRRA for more than a decade and still retained his registration card, stressed the importance of residents’ data to effective government planning.
He explained that accurate population information would help the government determine the infrastructure and social amenities required by communities, particularly in areas such as education.
The traditional ruler therefore called on indigenes, residents, homeowners, visitors and other eligible persons who had not registered to do so, while urging community, market and other local leaders to support LASRRA in reaching residents who were not present at the sensitisation programme.
Oba Oyebo also dispelled concerns linking LASRRA registration to the payment of head tax, explaining that the exercise was primarily aimed at supporting proper planning and development.
As part of the engagement, the LASRRA General Manager announced 20 free slots for Trade Test certification for eligible artisans and skilled workers in the community.
