Wednesday 23rd September 2026 was the turn of residents and locals in Oke Apon Yemetu area of Ibadan North local government council area of Oyo State to benefit from the prostrate cancer awareness outreach of Oyenike Oyekan foundation.
The event which took place at the Oke Apon/Yemetu primary health centre attracted a large number of elderly men and staffs of the PHC who were lectured on prostrate cancer, causes, symptoms and the need for regular checkups in the fight against cancer.
The lead presentation at the awareness outreach was delivered by the managing consultant of Oyenike Oyekan foundation Nelson Ekujumi, who made it clear that men from age 50 and above are at risk of prostrate cancer and that the risk increases as they grow older.
He spoke of age being a critical factor as the cause of prostrate cancer for men, as well as the family history. He highlighted the symptoms to watch out for which should necessitate visiting the hospital for a checkup to include, difficulty in urinating, decreased force of stream, blood in the urine or semen, back pain, bone pain, etc.
He made it known that every male adult above 50 years of age is a potential patient of prostrate cancer, but that regular PSA screening is key to identify early detection. He emphasized to the participants that prostrate cancer like other types of cancer is not a death sentence, that " It''s treatable and curable provided it's detected early".
Mrs Funmi Pitan the health educator of Ibadan North local government council area also admonished the participants to spread the message about cancer because of it's ravaging impact on humanity, so that "When we are aware of the disease, we can seek help and combat it".
Some of the participants spoken to at the event, commended Oyenike Oyekan foundation for the enlightenment outreach on prostrate cancer which to them has thrown more light on an area that they have little information and knowledge about, just as they called on other non governmental organizations to also help upscale awareness to aid the fight and defeat it.
