A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party and Convener of the Oluyede Progressive Alliance for Renewed Hope Agenda (OPARHA), Dr. Oluwole Olumayokun Oluyede, has commended President Bola Tinubu over the payment of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance (CONTTA) to eligible staff of tertiary institutions across the country.
Oluyede described the development as a welcome intervention that demonstrated the Federal Government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, strengthening industrial harmony and enhancing the quality of education in Nigeria.
The commendation followed the unveiling of agreements covering the allowances for eligible academic and non-academic staff of universities, polytechnics and colleges of education on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
In a statement, Oluyede said the welfare of workers remained central to the effective delivery of quality education, noting that lecturers, researchers, technical personnel and other institutional employees played important roles in developing the country’s human capital.
He said, “We commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for this intervention, which recognises the contributions of academic and non-academic staff to the development of Nigeria’s education sector.
“Investing in the welfare of these workers is an investment in our young people and the future of our country. A motivated workforce is essential to improving teaching, research, innovation and the overall quality of education.”
The OPARHA convener said the payment arrangements underscored the importance of maintaining constructive engagement between the Federal Government and relevant unions in the tertiary education sector.
He noted that improved staff welfare could boost morale, reduce avoidable industrial disputes and create a more stable environment for academic activities.
Oluyede, however, urged the relevant government agencies and institutional authorities to ensure the effective implementation of the agreements, stressing that all eligible beneficiaries should receive their entitlements in accordance with the approved terms.
He also called on the Federal Government to sustain its engagement with academic and non-academic staff unions, adding that regular dialogue and faithful implementation of agreements were essential to maintaining industrial peace.
According to him, the government should complement the allowance arrangements with sustained investment in infrastructure, research funding, modern teaching facilities, digital learning and improved working conditions across tertiary institutions.
He said Nigeria’s ambition to build a competitive, knowledge-based economy required deliberate investment in education and the people responsible for delivering it.
Oluyede expressed optimism that continued cooperation between the government and education sector stakeholders would strengthen tertiary institutions, improve learning outcomes and enhance the contribution of education to national development.
He urged all stakeholders to support initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of education workers and creating an environment in which Nigerian institutions could deliver quality teaching, research and innovation.
