A civil society organization Centre for Social and Economic Rights (CSER) has commiserated with the government and people of Lagos State over the unfortunate train/bus accident which occurred in Lagos today Thursday 9th March 2023 and resulted in fatalities and injuries to victims.
In a press statement issued by the executive director of the organization Nelson Ekujumi, the group expressed sadness over the incident, it stated that "We are indeed saddened and pained by the unfortunate and avoidable train/bus accident at PWD in Ikeja Lagos today 9th March 2023, which resulted in the death of about 6 persons and injuries to so many others who were commuting to their places of work".
According to the group, "Our hearts goes out to the victims of the unfortunate accident and their families in this trying times as we pray that God should grant the departed eternal rest and comfort their families, while we wish the injured, speedy recovery".
The group commiserated with the government and people of Lagos over the sad incident and prays that such an accident should not reoccur.
The civil society organization appreciated emergency responders and health institutions for their prompt response to the accident and victims which contributed in no small measure to mitigating the casualty figures.
The group also lauded Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his humane disposition and exemplary leadership in cancelling his official engagements for the day and visiting the victims in the hospitals to comfort them and their families, in addition to Mr. Governor cancelling all his political campaigns and public outings for 3 days in honour of the victims of the avoidable accident.
CSER then called on the management of Nigeria Railways Corporation (NRC), to ensure that it erects barricades at every railway crossing intersections so as to stop the movement of vehicles and persons when the train is approaching and prevent a reoccurrence of this type of tragic accident anywhere in the country.
