The Benue State Commissioner of Information and Tourism, Mr Mathew Abo, has been abducted from his residence in the Zaki-Biam community in the Ukum Local Government Area of the state.
Abo recently took office as a member of the Benue State Executive Council on August 29th, 2023, and his hometown, Ukum local government area, has been grappling with increased criminal activities.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the commissioner was abducted by a group of gunmen who arrived at his house in Zaki-Biam on four motorcycles.
The armed assailants ordered everyone present, including Abo's wife and children, to lie face down. Subsequently, they forcibly took him away on one of the motorcycles to an undisclosed location, with one of the gunmen accompanying him.
The incident has been officially reported to the police, although as of now, the Benue State Police Command has not responded to requests for confirmation.
The Chief Press Secretary to the State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, Kula Tersoo, has verified the kidnapping. He revealed that the abduction occurred in the commissioner's country home in Ukum LGA around 8 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, 2023.
Governor Hyacinth Alia has instructed security operatives to take immediate action to ensure the safe release of Commissioner Mathew Abo from the kidnappers' custody.
