The Lagos State Government has reinforced its commitment to safeguarding children through a two-day Safeguarding and Child Protection Workshop. Over 200 headteachers, principals, and guidance counsellors from Education District 6 (Ikeja, Mushin, and Oshodi-Isolo zones) attended the workshop.
The engagement emphasized the importance of child protection as schools resumed for a new term. Participants, including school administrators and guidance counsellors, were provided with copies of the Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and reminded of their mandatory duty to report suspected or actual child abuse. Failure to do so could attract civil and criminal sanctions.
The policy applies to all schools, orphanages, and child-centred institutions, both public and private. It underscores the seriousness of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration in ensuring children’s safety. Institutions were warned that negligence or failure to implement the policy could result in legal actions.
Facilitated courses included an overview of the policy by Mr. Jubril Yakubu, laws guiding child rights by the Executive Secretary of DSVA, and handling disclosures by Mrs. Bisi Kayode.
Participants were trained on reporting abuse, handling referrals professionally, and adopting the policy to fit their unique contexts. This initiative reaffirms the State’s commitment to protecting children and ensuring their well-being.
