LAGOS DSVA ENGAGES MAGISTRATES TO ADVANCE SGBV JUSTICE

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) recently engaged 60 Magistrates in a two-day meeting to strengthen the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in the state.

Executive Secretary, Mrs. Titilola Vivour Adeniyi, emphasized the state’s commitment to eradicating SGBV under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. She reiterated that SGBV is a grave human rights violation affecting all demographics, leaving lasting physical, psychological, and emotional scars.

She stressed the critical role of the judiciary in ensuring justice for survivors. “Magistrates serve as the first point of contact in the justice system, and their decisions, sensitivity, and commitment are crucial in shaping the outcomes of SGBV cases.”

The engagement provided a platform for collaboration, capacity building, and strategy alignment to enhance prosecution efforts and support for survivors. Magistrates were urged to share best practices and explore innovative approaches for delivering justice efficiently and compassionately.

Facilitators included Mrs. Atinuke Odukoya (Overview of SGBV), Dr. Babajide Martins (Role of Magistrates in Implementing SGBV Laws), and Mrs. Juliet Olumuyiwa Rufai (Psychology of Survivors/Perpetrators & Referral Pathways). The event concluded with group discussions.

DSVA remains committed to building a justice system that punishes offenders, empowers survivors, and deters future occurrences of SGBV.
