The Nigeria Customs Service Ogun I Area Command witnessed a change in leadership on Thursday, 24 April 2025. The leadership renewed its pledge to strengthen border security, enhance operational efficiency, and sustain the Command’s recent gains.
During an official handover ceremony at the Command headquarters in Idiroko, the new Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Godwin Otunla, expressed appreciation for the leadership of his predecessor, Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu. He described his tenure as one marked by strategic breakthroughs and commendable achievements. "His strategic foresight has undoubtedly raised the bar, leaving behind a legacy worthy of emulation."
"As I assume the role of Area Controller here, my vision is to consolidate on the gains already recorded and pursue continuous improvement in efficiency, intelligence-led operations, stakeholder collaboration and community relations", he added.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the Service's core mandate, which includes suppressing smuggling, facilitating legitimate trade, and safeguarding the nation’s borders. Comptroller Otunla also urged the command's officers and men to remain professional, diligent, and steadfast in their duties.
The Area Controller further emphasised the importance of maintaining strong community relations and building trust with host communities and partners. He warned those involved in smuggling activities to desist or face the full wrath of the law.
In his remarks, outgoing Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu reflected on his tenure and deeply appreciated the command's officers and men for their unwavering support and dedication.
"During difficult decisions, toes were stepped on but not for personal gain. In this light, I am very pleased to say that the Command has been transformed significantly in structures, revenue generation, antismuggling, and trade facilitation", he said.
He concluded by expressing gratitude to all stakeholders, the service's leadership, and confidence in Comptroller Otunla’s ability to move the Command forward.
