The Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), H.E. Silas Agara, has urged the Federal Ministry of Education to make entrepreneurship a compulsory course in higher institutions.
The DG made this call during a courtesy visit from Hon. Lola Akande, Pro Chancellor of the Federal University Lafia, at the NDE headquarters in Abuja.
According to DG, higher institutions play a vital role in shaping the mindset of Nigerian youth towards entrepreneurship. He emphasized that universities can provide aspiring entrepreneurs with the necessary mentorship to meet global market demands by collaborating with the NDE.
Speaking further, he disclosed that the NDE is working closely with the Senate to secure a supplementary budget to fund the establishment and revitalization of skills centres nationwide. This initiative is part of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu's renewed hope agenda aimed at creating job opportunities for Nigerian youth.
The DG-NDE revealed plans to establish a skills centre in Akwanga Local Government Area. Additionally, the existing skills centre in Wamba Local Government, which is currently non-functional, is expected to be revitalized and operational by the end of the quarter.
Hon. Lola Akande, Pro Chancellor of the Federal University Lafia, sought assistance from the NDE to upgrade, expand, and equip the university's skills centres during the visit.
