The Baptist Boys High School, Saje, Abeokuta, erupted in jubilation as Lagos boxers harvested 14 medals in various categories, marking the end of the boxing event at the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged the "Gateway Games 2024”.
Team Lagos clinched seven gold, two silver, and five bronze medals in different weight categories, finishing top in the highly competitive boxing. The pugilists from the state of aquatic splendor showcased their mastery of the sport, outclassing opponents to make a strong statement and demonstrate their exceptional skills.
Lagos, known for its heavy investment in sports infrastructure, once again set the pace in boxing, along with other disciplines.
The first boxing gold medal for Lagos came from Idowu Mistura in the 55kg category. She defeated Ayomide Mayowa of host state Ogun, 5–0, to register the team’s opening victory.
Ajishola Kadijat followed suit in the 65kg category, claiming gold with a performance that mirrored Mistura's dominance. All-African Games gold medallist Blessing Orakwe added to the tally in the 77kg division, defeating Patricia Mbaka of Kaduna with a unanimous 5-0 decision.
Adeshina Zainab impressed in the 48kg category with sharp punches and balanced footwork, edging out Delta’s Glory Ighomi via a 3–2 split decision to secure another gold for Lagos
In the men’s 85kg division, Micheal Olomitutu proved his prowess in the ring, overpowering Oseme Ochuko of Delta State to claim gold. This marked a remarkable comeback for Olomitutu, who failed to win in his debut at Delta 2022.
Adding to the medal haul, Abijuwon Faruq 58kg defeated Ogun boxer Oshikoya Faruq to stand atop the podium with gold. Akanni Muibat Anuoluwapo also joined the golden club, clinching victory in the 50kg category.
Meanwhile, Omotajo Semiu Olamilekan and Ikimot Jinadu won silver medals in 75kg and -65kg weights. Those that grabbed bronze medals were Abdullah Robiu 60kg,Adigun Oluwadamilola Mariam+81kg, Obanla Saka Opeyemi -80kg Omotajo Qudus 65kg,and Lateef Qudus in 55kg respectively.
In his reaction, Michael disclosed that representing Lagos State is a great privilege for him particularly at the Nigeria's premier multi-sport event.
