.....As the Phase 1 of Alaba Okoko Iba Transnational Market will be completed this Year.
In continuation of the Lagos State Government quest towards Urban Regeneration, Development and abating Environmental and Security nuisances, the Office of Urban Development, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development's today engaged Alaba Transnational Market Stakeholders at Oniba Palace, Iba Town, Lagos.
According to the representative of the Lagos State Governor, the Special Adviser on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Babatunde said that the Stakeholders' Engagement was to keep the community and stakeholders abreast about the ongoing reconstruction of Alaba Okoko Iba Transnational Market
"Community Development requires Community Engagement, as the government wants to build with the people and not for the people because anything built for them might not be used, therefore, it is always better to build with them", he stated.
Olajide however disclosed that the reconstruction of the market is in six phases, as the construction of the first phase has already started, which consists of 10 blocks of 60 shops per block and will be completed by the end of the year.
He stressed further that the phase four of the project which is the cattle ranch and trailer parks is simultaneously constructed with the first phase, in order to quickly resettle the livestock' traders in the market.
The Special Adviser further emphasized that the State Government is working closely with the host community being led by His Royal Majesty, Oba Sulaimon Adeshina Raji-Ashade 1, the Oniba Ekun of Iba Land to see to the successful completion of the project.
"We have been working together with the community, the State Government had in the past helped the community to totally remove some buildings that were critically distressed and not properly planned. The government are also rebuilding Alaba/Iba Transnational Market with the people that were there before, particularly the Hausa Community", he added.
On his part, The Lagos State house of Assembly member and chairman committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development, Honourable Ogunkelu Sylvester, added that the Stakeholders will justify the use of public funds through the construction of buildings that will be comfortable, safe, secure and habitable for all.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftancy matter, Bolaji Robert applauded the state government for bringing 21st century economy to Iba Community, and also commended the Iba Community and the Stakeholders of Alaba/Iba Transnational Market for their unwavering support.
He also urged them to collaborate with the State Government for the full completion of the project.
In his address, The Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Oki assured the traders whose shops were affected of getting their shops back immediately after the completion of the blocks as the State Government has no plan of taking their shops away from them.
Oki also reiterated that a thorough stage by stage inspection and supervision of the building construction processes from foundation to the finish level will be done by the Lagos State Building Control Agency, and the State Certified Accreditors.
The Iba Local government chairman, Hon. Yisa Abiola Jubril commended the Lagos State Government on their effort in turning Iba to a globalized community.
He also promised that the grassroot will give their utmost support in the reconstruction of Alaba Okoko Iba Transnational Market.
His Royal Majesty, Oba Sulaimon Adeshina Raji-Ashade 1, Oniba Ekun of Iba Land, while applauding the State Government for the development brought to Iba also promised to construct a Police Post inside the Market for security purposes.
During the Stakeholders' engagement, two operational vehicles and vests were unveiled for work coordination and easy identification of officers involved in the building construction processes.
The committe also comprises of both the Lagos State Government officials and Alaba/Iba Transnational Market Stakeholders.
