NEMA Commences Flood Response Simulation Activities in Anambra State

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has commenced a series of activities in Anambra State as part of its flood response simulation exercise, aimed at enhancing preparedness and coordination among relevant stakeholders ahead of the 2025 flood season

The four-day program began on Wednesday 18th June, 2025 with a technical engagement session involving officials from the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Ebonyi SEMA, Ogbaru Local Government Council, members of the Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC), local boat operators and divers, community leaders, and volunteers.

Also present were representatives of key response agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Department of State Services (DSS), Federal Fire Service, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

The Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Kenneth Oyong, represented the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, at the opening session. He was joined by the Executive Secretary of Anambra SEMA, who led the state's delegation. Technical presentations were delivered on this year’s flood predictions, recommended early actions, and measures already initiated by NEMA to mitigate the anticipated impact.

As part of the preparatory activities, the team also conducted a site assessment of the proposed location for the flood simulation exercise, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday.

The simulation exercise is a proactive initiative by NEMA to raise public awareness about the predicted floods and to bring together critical stakeholders, particularly at the grassroots level, to define their roles and responsibilities in mitigating the risks and ensuring effective response during emergencies.
