The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated government’s commitment to promote sports development and support talents to build professional careers.
Declaring the 23rd African Fencing Championship open in Lagos, Governor Sanwo-Olu pledged the State Governments unwavering commitment to ensuring sports thrive through support to international events.
Governor Sanwo-Olu was ably represented at the opening ceremony of the ongoing championships holding at at the CharterHouse, Lekki, by the Director General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu
According to the Director General, Governor Sanwo-Olu believes that the championship opens the door to vital conversations about how fencing can serve as a powerful tool for broader social good.
The championship, which is set to bring over 26 countries and 200 athletes to display skill and sportsmanship, is scheduled to be held from 25th - 29th June 2025.
‘Fencing contribute meaningfully to youth empowerment, child protection, and poverty alleviation, while creating economic opportunities for our athletes’, he noted.
“Fencing, now more than ever, can mean so much more for the African child. We have an opportunity to change the lives of children who are yet to discover the sport. “
‘I am confident that with the right collaboration, fencing can be introduced in all public schools across the nation, he stated.
