His Excellency, Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, FNSE, FAEng, the Òtúnba Obalofin of Ìjèbúland, has described the late Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, HRM Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, GCON, Ogbagba II, as “not just a traditional ruler, but a father to us all,” during a solemn condolence visit to the royal family on Monday, July 14, 2025.
Otunba Daniel, who served as the Governor of Ogun State from 2003 to 2011 and now represents Ogun East Senatorial District, led a high-powered delegation to the Ijebu palace to pay his respects and offer words of comfort and gratitude to the royal household.
In his emotional address, Senator Daniel stated:
“Kabiyesi was not just our revered traditional ruler; he was a guiding light, a father figure, and a symbol of unwavering courage and truth. His reign brought unprecedented dignity, progress, and global recognition to Ijebuland. I am honoured to have served during his time and even more grateful for the fatherly counsel he extended to me over the years.”
Otunba Daniel praised Oba Adetona’s sterling leadership, integrity, and deep commitment to the development of Ijebuland and Nigeria at large. He noted that the late monarch’s legacy of truth, equity, and modernization of traditional institutions will continue to inspire generations.
The condolence visit witnessed a gathering of notable dignitaries, chiefs, and indigenes of Ijebuland who all echoed similar sentiments about the impactful reign of Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960 and became the longest-reigning first-class monarch in Nigeria's history.
Otunba Daniel concluded with a prayer for the royal family and Ijebuland, urging unity and collective reflection as preparations continue for a befitting celebration of the Awujale’s life and legacy.
“We have lost a king, but gained an eternal symbol of integrity and royalty. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” he said.
The visit adds to the outpouring of condolences and tributes from across Nigeria as the nation continues to mourn one of its most respected and influential traditional rulers.
